These works grew out of my Centre & Hastings series. When working on the bike lane marking in the scene, in particular, I was struck by how simply it portrayed a cyclist. The bike lanes had also been a hard fought issue in our neighborhood, so the mere presence of this icon was a political statement in itself. The more I looked at it and its simple color scheme of green and white, the more red would be an obvious fit. And a friend's Santa hat helmet cover only accentuated that connection, and offered a simple graphic silhouette.
I completed a total of 17 iterations, from very basic white figure with green background and red hat, through a collection of collages using maps to a more deconstructed and abstract use of the colors. I put the 17 options up for my local bike club to vote on and created cards for the top-five results for the winter of 2025. Current available originals and prints are noted below.
